Once a people’s institutions and expectations are cast down, society’s subtle warp and weft of deference, obligation, accommodation, and sacrifice become hollow words at best or just another means of oppression. If nothing is sacred or set apart — life without boundary — then marriage becomes an arcane institution of mutual extortion, once the gilding has faded.
