I’ll grant you that the premise of this movie doesn’t sound very promising. But some movies are found in their characters, atmosphere, and their gentle, yet interesting, pacing. This movie is a warm cup of coffee as opposed to Jolt Cola.

Those familiar with the excellent movie, Local Hero, will understand the atmospherics. This is a small Irish (Scottish in Local Hero) outpost on the sea. The grandparents are sensible people, but 10-year-old Fiona begins to discover a layer that is either the product of a child’s gullibility or her non-jaded sense of wonder and openess. Could some of these legends she is hearing be true, or partially true? Or does insanity run in the family?

The grandparents are exquisitely real characters, not caricatures. Love it or hate it, this movie rings true. It takes not cheap shortcuts. It puts away the loud music and cliches to wrap you in a warm story on a cold coastline. It’s currently streaming on Netflix.
