Can anyone out there help Joseph Farah of WND rename the “mainstream media”?
Here’s what Joseph is trying to do:
What am I struggling over? Rebranding what we have for too long euphemistically referred to as “the mainstream media.”
But what to call the dinosaurs to expedite their extinction?
—Rename Mainstream Media
Here’s the name Farrah suggests:
I call them the “lapdog media.”
There is certainly a problem with the label “mainstream media.” I have noticed that every time I write something that requires the mention of that worn-out name; I have difficulty because I fully realize the label’s obsolescence. It just doesn’t fit any more for many reasons. For me, the primary reason the term doesn’t fit the targeted media anymore is NOT because of the growing obsolescence of the term; it is because the term carries a lingering connotation of respectability that the media-agencies referred to have not had for a long time. They are no longer respectable. They have become a disgrace.
The thing to accomplish then with any proposed relabeling of the “mainstream media” is to adopt a fitting marketing-label (memorable, easy-to-use, carries visual connotations, etc.) that communicates very accurately the deserved negative denotations and/or connotations or both. In other words, the label should communicate, if possible, some, or all, of the following actions that describe the majority of the entire group (members of “mainstream media”):
- They have become disgraceful.
- They are Left-wing partisans.
- They favor socialistic practices.
- They despise Christians.
- They despise Conservatives.
- They despise the US military.
- They pander and appease Democrat politicians.
- They despise and undermine Republican politicians.
- The praise and promote Progressivism.
- They report opinions not news.
- They only report facts they favor.
- They leave-out important facts.
- They engage in downright dishonest reporting.
- They no longer practice journalist ethics.
- They are often ignorant yet remain arrogant.
- They have become extremely dangerous to liberty.
I fear that we may be discussing an almost impossible labeling-mission here. How could all of the above notions be packed into one single label?
I got it! Here’s my suggestion:
Let’s call them the HydraMedia!
Here’s why. With all of the many dangerous facets (heads) and all the serpentine, dishonest tactics (movements) the label Hydra absolutely fits:
In Greek mythology, the Lernaean Hydra (Greek: Λερναία Ὓδρα) was an ancient serpent-like water monster with reptilian traits. It possessed many heads – the poets mention more heads than the vase-painters could paint – and for each head cut off it grew two more. It had poisonous breath and blood so virulent that even its tracks were deadly. The Hydra of Lerna was killed by Heracles as the second of his Twelve Labours.
OK: Joseph Farrah has proposed his label; I’ve proposed mine.
What’s your proposed label?
