Progressives’ Redefinitions and Newton’s Third Law

Words are the fundamental vessels for human ideas. Progressives have no fresh political ideas—and they haven’t had any that even appear fresh since the days of Herbert Hoover and FDR—so they often resort to the parasitic tactic of redefinition of legitimate terminology.

What is the tactic?  Take a word or a phrase that fits an existing, legitimate concept, and alter the words to fit a concept that aligns with a progressive political agenda.

For the most part, this tactic has worked well for Progressives.

But even if a redefinition is accomplished, there is a problem inherent in this deceitful maneuver.  There is a spiritual law in human activity that is found in the Bible,

The ‘law of the harvest’: “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. “ Galatians 6:7 NASB

Paraphrase: Whatever acts a person sows (acts directed toward others), he will, eventually, reap (acts directed toward himself).

The physical ‘law of the harvest’ is found in Newton’s Third Law of motion:

For every action there is an equal and opposite [in the other direction] reaction.

Progressives intellectually recognize this law, but they have traditionally counted on the fact that the ‘equal and opposite reaction’ is often delayed.  Progressives have depended upon the fact that the deceitful terminology of their propaganda will often become ingrained in the public-mind before the reaction kicks-in.  This process is often referred to as ‘framing the debate’.

In the past it has often worked.

But now, there is a new information technology that is hampering all areas of Progressive deceit.

The new information technology is Internet News and Editorials (including blogs).

Internet News and Editorials hamper the Progressive’s redefinition of words in two ways:

1) Spotlighting. Tampering with definitions is reported and discussed, almost immediately, by numerous online sources, and

2) Preservation. Written and often video/audio records are widely available online, showing the deceitful culprits in their very acts of deceit.

As an example, take one of the Progressives’ latest redefinitions. An ‘Illegal immigrate’ has been redefined as an ‘undocumented immigrate’; hence ‘Illegal immigration’ is changed to ‘undocumented immigration’.

Then further, according to the recent redefinition by the most moronic member of Congress, Shelia Jackson Lee, ‘immigration’ is now ‘migration’.

“Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, the congresswoman once dubbed the “Congressional boss from Hell,” explained that the flood of illegal immigrants across America’s southern border isn’t “immigration,” it’s “migration.””

Notice this two-step move.  First, the correct legal term, ‘illegal immigration’ is truncated to remove ‘illegal’, the legitimate term that is being avoided.  Second the word ‘immigration’ is replaced by the word ‘migration’.

This two-step maneuver illustrates the logical fallacy that Progressives often commit when they engage in the deceit of redefinition: The logical fallacy of ‘category mistake’.

“A category mistake, or category error, is a semantic or ontological error in which things belonging to a particular category are presented as if they belong to a different category…”  —Reference2

Moving in a two-step manner from the correct category, ‘illegal immigration’ (a category of human movement involving national-boundary illegalities), to an incorrect category, ‘migration’ (a category of human or animal movement where the idea of legality is not inherent); the redefinition is complete.

And of course the redefinition is echoed by the ever-pliant, progressively-slanted, unfaithful media, and as you will shortly see, also the Gallop poll:

“While all three networks covered the story, only the CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley actually called the 140 passengers “illegal immigrants” with ABC and NBC choosing to call them “migrants” and “undocumented immigrants” respectively.” —Reference3

Progressive mission accomplished?  Not so fast.  The redefinition must now be sold to the general public.

In the current explosion of ‘illegal immigration’ of children across our US southern border, according to the latest Gallop poll—which accepts without comment the redefinition of illegal immigrant—the American people are not buying into the redefinition-lie of Progressives/Democrats:

“PRINCETON, NJ — With thousands of undocumented immigrant minors [notice the uncommented acceptance of the redefinition] crossing the nation’s southern border in recent months, the percentage of Americans citing immigration as the top problem has surged to 17% this month, up from 5% in June, and the highest seen since 2006. As a result, immigration now virtually ties “dissatisfaction with government,” at 16%, as the primary issue Americans think of when asked to name the country’s top problem.” —Reference4

Furthermore citizens across the nation are resisting Obama’s illegal relocation of these hoards of illegal immigrants:

“Citizens in Westminster, Maryland; Oracle, Arizona; Vassar, Michigan; Greece, New York, and many other places have blocked the importation of illegal aliens into their communities through public protests, letters and official resolutions from elected leaders.” —Reference5

Of course, as to be expected, some of the loudest Democrat voices in favor of dissolving our southern border are also the biggest hypocrites in Obama’s planned destruction of US immigration laws:

(CNN) – After his strong criticism of the Obama administration’s plans to return thousands of young undocumented migrants back to Central America, Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley asked a top White House official that the children not be sent to a site that was under consideration in his home state, sources familiar with the conversation said.

“He privately said ‘please don’t send these kids to Western Maryland,'” a Democratic source told CNN. The heated discussion between O’Malley and White House domestic policy adviser Cecilia Munoz occurred during a phone call late Friday evening, sources familiar with the conversation added.” —Reference6

Sure, an Obama donor, Democrat Governor of Maryland, Martin O’Malley, is all in favor of America being flooded with illegal immigrants, so as to create new Democrat voters; but NIMBY (not in my back yard).

In the midst of the ongoing violation of the Constitution by Barack Obama, be happy, or at least be aware that we are currently witnessing the evidence of two very important actions:

1) An increasing number of Americans are resisting the Progressive/Democrat deceitful tactic of redefinition, and

2) Newton’s third law is operating in the political realm.

Conservatives should not only expose single progressive-propaganda-initiatives such as the accusation of the ‘war on women’, but should also spend more time countering the larger on-going Progressive/Democrat ‘war on legitimate terminology’.

Yes, we should never give in to tendentious liberal phrasing. The importance of this misuse of language was discussed by Orwell in “Politics and the English Language” — and as with 1984, liberals see that as a guidebook rather than a warning.

A good example can be seen in “affirmative action”. It can refer to anything from (uncontroversial) outreach to (very unpopular and dubious) racial quotas. So the liberals use this vague umbrella term so that anyone who opposes affirmative action in the form of racial quotas can be smeared as opposing outreach and even anti-discrimination laws (which technically aren’t even at issue, but truth has never been a concern for liberals, devoted as they are to the Father of Lies).

We see the same pattern with “global warming” aka “climate change” aka “climate disruption”. The vague term makes it hard to refute (after all, the climate always is going through periodic changes). And no matter what the terminology, they can smear those who disagree with the unproven and dubious theory of catastrophic anthropogenic climate change as disbelieving the mild warming since the end of the Little Ice Age (hence the smear phrase “global warming deniers”).

Two exceptionally gifted losers found out the hard way about the “spotlight” effect.
Dan Rather and Mary Mapes both got their obsessed asses fired for it, albeit quietly.

As one would expect they made their pathetic denials public domain by, yet again, two more books akin to “I Rigoburta Menchu”.
What is it with liberals and their love of painfully ham-fisted titles?? One blowhard went with “The politics of Truth”. Mary Mapes, not to be outdone, embarrassed herself even further. Her book is title “Truth and Duty”

What I love about this website is that we all know Nelson won’t be putting those works of fiction on this site’s bookshelf. (No one has read them anyway – probably not even the authors.)

  3. I love the application of Newton’s 3rd Law — it’s true that laws of physics often have philosophical applications — the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics, for instance.

The misuse of language is one of my hot button issues — in fact I have a piece that will appear on American Thinker tomorrow about that concern. It is so much fun to see where other brains go with similar ideas. Great piece, Jerry.

    Great article!

As with most things progressive, they tend to progress from ridiculous to absurd and on beyond insane! Apparently, 40 year old men with grey hair – as long as they no speaka da English – are now to be referred to as children!
