Post Universal Basic Income

The billionaire Zuckerberg is one of several silicon valley billionaires who have called for a so-called "universal basic income" for everyone. This appears to be something other than classic welfare.

http://www.cnbc.com/2017/05/25/mark-zuckerberg-calls-for-universal-basic-income-at-harvard-speech.html

Appropriately, he called for this nonsense while giving a commencement address at an ivy league university.

Why such people as Zuckerberg call for such a nutty and unsupportable thing makes one wonder. As is often the case in life, I suppose his motives are mixed. Today's tech billionaires have probably done less and gained more wealth than anyone in history. (I do not include the old aristocracy of inherited wealth) Is there a level of guilt there which must be assuaged? If so, the guilt can't be very profound as they still hold on to their billions.

This call for a "universal basic income" so everyone can "follow their dream" is becoming more common. It is no longer considered insane and appears to be gaining purchase in the culture as a whole. We must be careful that it does not sneak up on us like other insane ideas, e.g. transgender bathrooms, and become law.

Whenever some super-billionaire like Zuckerberg prates of a guaranteed income, he should be challenged to pay for it himself. They can afford a lot of those checks, far more than ordinary taxpayers.

I suspect part of the motivation lies in the fact that Zuckerberg and his ilk are monopolists and they want to pretend to have the interest of the little people at heart.

The link leads to a very good article on how big tech is actually a drag on the economy, exactly because much of it is acting as a monopoly.

First off, Mr. Kung, thank you for making use of these forums. Kneel for a moment. Trust me. I won’t cut your head off. “I dub thee, Kung Fu Zu, moderator of these forums.” You now have god like powers to delete, move, etc. Careful that you don’t accidentally do so. The same with Timothy. Should either of you need to remove a double post, spam, or whatever, please do so.

Second, I want Universal Basic Blonde. It’s not fair that some guys have a better-looking girlfriend (or girlfriend at all) than I do. I can live on rice and beans if need be. Way back on my list of priorities is Universal Basic Income. Screw that. Err….I have something else in mind that I think is even more basic.

And you are so right about the condescending nature of this proposal by this ass-wipe.

I was not sure where to put this link as I don't believe any particular article has addressed the subject. So I figured I better try and make use of this new forma thingy.

As I am not very computer literate, it took me a few minutes to figure out how to use this. No doubt, I will forget how and have to re-learn it again. But is convenient and takes a lot less time than looking through old pieces in order to post a comment.

Can I now be called Sir Sagacious?

I'm with you as regards the need for Universal Basic Broads, be they blonde, red-head, brunette or black. And by the way, I think it even more unfair that there are people younger, taller, smarter, better looking, healthier, faster, stronger, happier, more powerful, etc., etc., etc. than I. I am unable to pursue my dreams without these characteristics. We must do something to address the inherent inequality in everything. Surely, Zuckerberg could spend all his money to rectify all of these problems.

I think I'd be satisfied to have my health of a few years ago, before my leg ulcers. Can Zuckerberg give me a new pair of legs? That might be enough.

He should be able to steal a new pair of legs from "the rich" in a fairly standard method of redistributive wealth. Now that Suckerberg is a rich stupid kid (instead of just a stupid kid), he can probably do so himself if he really cares. He can hire people to walk for him.

I think Mr. Zu, you are right on the money, about this guys and their need to cover their guilt for getting where they are without really earning it. Do not get me wrong, I am happy for them and anyone that can hit that kind of economic home run. I also am not all that concerned about how much work they had to do to get it, (envious maybe, but not concerned). I just cannot understand why I should care what this guy thinks about something he knows nothing about; or why I should give a rats butt about his “feelings” of guilt.
Just like I thought Bill Clinton should have told everyone that cared, the Monica was none of their business and when pushed he should have said, have you seen Hillary, (???), it’s good to be King. This morally weak punk should suck it up and put his big boy pants on. If that does not cut it for him, start donating all his money until he “feels” better, and loses his guilt.\
My comment has more to do with an example of the common man, (so to speak), than this asshat and his guilt. I was asked to be a judge at a Jr. High model shark tank exercise. The kids were to present an invention to a panel of judges. But the tie in to this discussion happened before the event. There was only one lady in the audience, and I went over to speak with her, after a bit of pleasantries, she had to explain how disgusting this country was for our being the richest country on the planet and yet we have so many poor and homeless, people, why should we see people sleeping in the street in America, we could afford to take care of all of them. So I was trying to be nice and I bit my tongue the whole time she was spewing this crap, and then she just stopped and looked as though she was looking for agreement. (sorry to disappoint, but that is not what she got).
First of all I had to ask her why she hates the poor so much. (She was shocked and looked like she did not understand, but said nothing). I asked her if she had ever gone to Chad, Somalia, India, Mexico, or any other 3rd world hell hole? The upper classes in those places do not have as much as the poor do in this country, but they are very happy with what they have. And that the policies that she is advocating will only serve to tear down the rich in this country and will do nothing for the poor she hates so much. (Well I never, she proclaimed, I continued), I am sorry this offends you so, but the poor of this country, have more processions and a better standard of living than the most of royalty in Europe from 200 years ago; and that only happened here because for the majority of this country’s history, we laughed at people like her and their socialist hatred and abuse of the poor.
I had not even gotten into why I thought she hates the poor so much, when, I was shocked, shocked I tell you, she got up and walked out. I guess she had never had anyone point out a portion of the truth of socialism and the damage it does to the poor. Well this little snowflake Granny will never be the same, and I learned that if you want to have any audience members’ stay, I may need to tone it down just a bit.

Standing ovation. Great stuff, Pat. And one Blonde would be more than enough. But I'll take a matching Brunette and Redhead.

Leftists are unused to genuine discussion. Their arguments are teleological -- if they agree with the conclusion, it must be a good argument. And they would never consider what's happening in Venezuela to reflect on their theories. No matter how often socialism fails and -- if no free-market reforms are used -- leads to total hell-holes, they believe this time it will work.
