But that isn't incompatible with your view of them as shallow and dumb, is it?

That any red-blooded American male would find the Tide commercials (which I thought were the worst of the lot) anything but offensive is a big problem. No man should see himself reflected as a complete dumb-ass idiot in a TV commercial and then be persuaded to buy someone’s product. The only healthy response would be to write Procter & Gamble a letter informing them that treating their customers as if they were idiots is no way to sell their product.

Of course, if their customers are already vulgar idiots with no sense of nobility or class then, well, you may indeed sell a lot of soap.

Or, of course, there is the very likely alternative: Women are still the major soap-buyers and given the Nazi-like Feminist movement (women are superior, men are meant for the cultural concentration camps of dumbness), portraying men as stupid probably is a way for advertisers to suck up to women . . . and sell a lot of soap. It used to be enough to show “Our whites are whiter.” Now apparently it’s “Our men are dumber.”

Making men come off as fools or incompetents goes back decades, and no doubt reflects trying to appeal to women (who do the bulk of the domestic buying) through flattery. I remember one from decades ago that involved a blown fuse, and it was the wife rather than the husband dealing with it, per contra "When I'm Sixty-Four" by the Beatles. ("I can be handy mending a fuse when your lights are gone. You can knit a sweater by the fireside. Sunday mornings, go for a ride."

They seem to have run this idea to an excess. But one assumes they are still selling soap to the same people. One also wonders if men have enough self-respect and dignity left to call this nonsense what it is. It’s particularly undignified when one is insulted and does not know it.
