Though Kimball can sometimes slip a bit into that mode himself. What the heck does "rebarbative" mean?

I also wondered what "rebarbative" meant, but couldn't be bothered to look it up.

Of course, when you make predictions that something will happen "eventually" (as they more or less seem to update Marx to do), you can never be proven wrong.

Exactly! I was thinking this earlier in the morning when considering the new socialists who have just joined the House. They keep repeating the same bromides and making the same predictions which Marx made. These predictions did not come true during Marx's life (and he thought they would) and they still haven't happened. But that fact will never stop a leftist from making the claim, "One day soon."

Notice that the enviro-zealots have learned this trick. They used to make specific predictions, which is embarrassing when they never come true. So they learned to make vague, at best very long-term, predictions. I compared this to the Millerites, whence sprang the Seventh Day Adventists (and also the Jehovah's Witnesses), and thus the Adventists' offfshoot, the Branch Davidians. Hence my occasionally referring to them as Branch Albertians.

This is also similar to an incident in Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. Some chap was telling a crowd how he could tell what various distant people were doing that very moment. Naturally none of them considered that they had no way of verifying his claims. (Twain may well have known about the Millerites, and they could have been his inspiration.)

I have tried to post this under Deane's AOC article, but it keeps rejecting it as spam.

The link is to a very nice article on Russell Kirk, which also goes some way to explain what it means to be conservative.

https://www.newcriterion.com/issues/2019/1/permanent-things-russell-kirks-centenary

Kirk's writings showed that "At its base, conservatism is about culture, not economics."

I have been writing this for some years at ST. I am gratified to learn that Kirk thought the same thing.
