I've instituted a new masthead for the site. Let me know what you think.

Also, although it adds to the professionalism of the site, I'd like to get rid of the "slider" image at the top highlighting featured articles. I so rarely update it and it takes some work to do so. Thoughts?

Looks fine to me. I've noticed that the featured articles can be rather old. If it's that much trouble updating them, you might find a better alternative.

Thanks, Timothy. I'm sort of torn on the Featured Articles rotating graphic thingie. It really should be kept up-to-date.

The new masthead looks fine, but where are the pictures of the Swedish bikini team? If the featured articles is a pain to change I would go with something else, but what little I know of web sites is that the content does need to change frequently or people get bored quickly. The content changes fast around here, but the changing graphics does draw some in.

Thanks for the feedback, Pat. By this time — over 4 years since its inception — I expected to have a person or two to help out on the back end to help do such things as to change the graphics. I also hoped to have someone as a full-time part-time promoter of the site.

What I became surprised at was the relative lack of civic spiritness. Everyone wants to bitch and complain (on my dime) but few want to chip in. You and some other gems have chipped in. I didn’t expect to have this core set of benefactors. I accepted the expenses going into this but thought that others would share some of the time on the back end. This has been a nice surprise to have the financial benefactors.

But as for getting other lever-pullers on the back end, it would takes a lot of commitment and time for all involved to do that. It’s very very easy to break things, overwrite important data, etc. And I’m sort of a neat freak and I want the site to look organized and professional and not just be a bunch of annoying pop-up stuff like many other sites. So it’s been a one-man show and continues to be as far as pulling the levers in the background. But I do appreciate the feedback, positive or negative.

This is why I’ve tried to get people to make use of the forums section. Okay…I get it. Everyone wants to be on the front page and play the role of William F. Buckley, Jr. So do I to some extent. But not everything we have to say is article-length. And not everything people have to say is profound enough that I want to have to stop my day to do all that is necessary to post an article. So I encourage people to make use of the forums (with profundity or otherwise). If they won’t then they’re just not serious about it and instead are looking to “be someone” instead of following the passion of a good writer which is to write.

And as for these forums…again, if someone wants a specific forum set up for a specific topic, I’ll do that. I want to facilitate thoughtful writing in any way I can.

I thinned down the height of the menu bar a little. It was a bit too beefy to match the current look. As far as the “sliding” Featured Article slideshow graphic at the top, if someone is willing to place his butt on the line and play assistant editor, I’d appreciate it. It would mean:

1) Judging which articles are good enough to be highlighted. One could also look back at previous articles and every once in a while highlight them.

2) Go to Google Images (or wherever) and find a graphic or photo that both fits the subject matter and that seems wide enough to fit the slider. I can do the cropping of the graphic and all the other background coding that is necessary.

That’s it. That would go a long way to getting this done. But it would require someone of good taste who was just as picky about his or her own article as someone else’s in regards to what should be on that Featured Article list.

As you can see, I’ve been tinkering with the site’s look a little bit more. With some valuable input from Mr. Kung, I decided to put sort of a mission statement in the masthead to the right. All are welcome here, but I think it’s useful to have a succinct organizing principle. We talk about the same stuff here that everyone else does. But we do it unconstrained by the conventionality of The Daily Drama which usually consists of two sides parroting various talking points.

Here Trump is not good. Trump is not evil. He is considered a symptom of our culture and, as president, will sometimes do good things, sometimes do bad things, and sometimes just do Trump things.

The slogan could have been “thinking outside the box” but that’s become such a cliche. And, besides, everyone (even when they are fully indoctrinated and parroting someone else’s baloney) thinks they are thinking outside the box.

No one is without biases or basic tenets. The condition of the all-wise, all-objective blank slate is more baloney. But our goal here is at least to try to escape the daily drama and do something so often told of but rarely done: think for ourselves.

And that goes not just for politics but movie and book reviews…or whatever. Have some fun with this. You’ll notice that politics will be de-emphasized but not eliminated. How can one when everything now is politics as we slavishly follow the script of the left.

Or not. If you know you’re a rat running around in someone else’s maze, maybe that changes things. A lot of people don’t realize this and are thus easily baited with this kind of cheese or that kind of cheese.

I’d love the atmosphere here to be fun, loose, but smart. And that means that no one has to be perfect. So much of the web out there is basically “Gotchaville.” We shouldn’t do that here. We can disagree, and even correct a factual error or two. But playing “Gotcha” is just being a slave to The Daily Drama whereby the point is to show that your side is perfect, blessed, completely benevolent, and obviously infallible.

The Left has made people crazy, not that many people need all that much of a push. So have some fun and escape The Daily Drama. And when we do talk about the day’s events, I trust we can do so from a perspective not limited to The Drama.

I've added back in the "StubbornChat" feature. For whatever reason, it now seems to be playing better with the site. That might have something to due with the new caching/memory mechanisms behind the scenes. Whatever the case may be, I will use it to highlight articles of interest or just a quick note about something. Logged-in users can also make use of it for whatever they want. Type in what you want and hit return. That's it. You can include links if you want.

I see you revamped the featured articles list. Probably a good change, since several of the items don't need to change periodically. Do your movies reviews include <I>Casablanca</i>, since the picture comes from it?

I did a search and I don't see any review of Casablanca anywhere. I think I wrote on on Facebook a few years ago. But that particular piece of software has become such a quagmire. If I find it, I may post it.

And I'd like to do what I can to un-quagmire StubbornThings. Old things should be immensely easy to find. I haven't done a good job keeping up with "tagging" things. (Under the "Info" menu at the top you'll see a submenu for "Categories/Tags" and you can see how useful tags could be if one takes the time to apply them to an article.)

I don't expect to receive a competent volunteer so that will have to remain a rainy-day project. But if someone out there with WordPress experiences wants to volunteer, I'll give you a try.
