The link is to an interesting article on how some Chinese immigrants are seeing socialism follow them and don't like it. One hopes that this feeling will expand and others who have lived under "socialism" will fight back against the latest political trend in American.

Amazing. People who actually learned from their negative experience with leftist government. We'll know for sure if that means they go over to the GOP instead of sticking with the Demagogues. Only time will tell. But I hear Trump is also very popular with Venezuelan immigrants. After all, they didn't go to American public schools. Neither did the Chinese. Whatever that says about our education isn't good.

It is amazing. But of course, socialism works with intellectuals and ignoramuses and the Chinese, while valuing education, value it from a practical point of view.

The bit about abortion is very interesting to me. Years ago I remember a friend told me how an American group visited China and saw various medical facilities. In one, a live-birth abortion was performed and an American woman got very upset saying this could not happen in America. This was in the late 1980s/early 1990s. My how things have changed.

Hot Air has an article on the subject of the insanity defense for murder (it can apply to other crimes, but almost never does). So far 4 states no longer allow it, and a fifth is poised to join them. But a murderer who committed his crimes in one of them has appealed to SCOTUS, which will hear the case.

I'm not against the insanity defense provided it's limited to the famous McNaghten formulation (which showed up once on Perry Mason). This was fashioned in response to an attempted murder by a deranged individual around 1840 in Britain. Basically, the culprit is considered not guilty by reason of insanity if he literally had no idea of what he was doing or had no idea that there was anything wrong in doing it. I've thought about it a lot over the years, and have always concluded that the judge who came up with that really knew what he was doing.

But beyond that, the guilty are the guilty, though insanity might be considered in mitigation in some cases. Of course, such people should end up in the booby hatch, but that's another question. The link is:

Will SCOTUS help do away with the insanity defense?

This will start with a bit of history. In 1919, a group of 6 Chicago White Sox players threw the World Series in return for (reportedly) $10,000 apiece from a bunch of gamblers. (Another player, a minor reservist, was also involved, more or less by accident. And Buck Weaver knew what was happening but never took part. Thus, 8 players overall were linked to the fraud.) Eventually this was exposed, and 3 of them confessed to what they did. But when it came to trial, the confessions had somehow disappeared. Charles Comiskey, the owner, later used those missing confessions when it came to not having to pay the players after they were banned from the game.

This was merely one notable example of how corrupt the administration of justice can be in Chicago. And, today, we had another spectacular example. Charges against Jussie Smollett were dropped in return for forfeiting his $10,000 bond, and he had also a small amount of civic "service" working for the influential Jesse the Jetstream. (He has a lot of connections, not surprisingly.) The charges were also sealed and he continued to deny his crime even as everyone in authority denied this was any sort of exoneration.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

There was a recent and very troubling occurrence in Chicago that had nothing to do with either Jussie Smollett (though it may be linked in a way) or the city's homicide rate. Two cops arrested a drug dealer and confiscated his supply before he could sell it. Then a mob turned up and demanded that they release him -- or else. One stole the confiscated drugs from the police car, and another said he was armed and would shoot them if they didn't let the drug dealer go. They released him and left.

Was this mob the local drug gang defending one of their own? Possibly, and that's not a good thing. But I've read that many Latin American gangs are willing to challenge the police openly, whereas American gangs traditionally don't try to fight the police. (The song "The Night Chicago Died" is an interesting song, but pure fiction.) Even worse would be if the mob was locals, since that would mean they're on the side of criminals rather than the police. That will lead to anarchy, at least in much of the city. Bad as it is now, this will probably be a lot worse for the city -- especially the denizens of the anarchic areas.

One reason the police didn't challenge the mob may be their awareness of what would have happened if they had fired on the mob. The synoptic media would have attacked them as racist and used the incident to affirm black street paranoia. And we all know now how State's Attorney Kim Foxx, a social justice leftist elected through a large tranche of Soros money, would have reacted.

Chicago has much to see for a visitor, as Elizabeth found on our 2000 visit there (and we didn't have enough time and energy to see everything at some places). But right now, I doubt it's even a nice place to visit and wonder if it ever will be again. Another Demagogue stronghold may be biting the dust. And if America doesn't keep making the right choices, and the Demagogues ever succeed in taking the permanent control they seek, this is what will happen to all of America eventually. The link is:

Chicago police forced by mob to release drug dealer

Mark Steyn mentioned in one of his columns that Dennis Miller, on one of his comedy tours, said last month that he was going to get a gingerbread transgender at Christmas this year. Of course, as many of us have experienced (such as when I had a short piece about a department store Santa getting in trouble when a black girl named Tina Brawley decided that his saying "ho, ho, ho" was a racist insult), parodies of leftist idiocy have a history of soon coming true.

And so it is now, with some leftist seeking to come up with a name (one suggestion was "transginger", which at least has the merit of some nice wordplay) for such a gingerbread figure. I don't know if anyone wondered how you can actually have a transgender figure, since a gingerbread man actually shows no defining sex characteristics. Steyn himself suggested a figure with "knockers that could stop a train and hung like a horse", which would at least work (though it would also be inaccurate, since a genuine hermaphrodite is not a transgender). Well, there really has been some breaking news today. Last year the Catholic Church in France sought charitable contributions to repair Notre Dame de Paris, which was starting to crumble after over 800 years. More recently they started the renovations, but today it probably became irrelevant when the church caught fire, at least in the upper floors where there are (or were) a lot of wooden timbers for support. The roof has collapsed, and the great spire has fallen.

There's no answer yet on why it happened; possibly an accident, though inevitably I wonder about possible terrorism (especially this close to Easter). Only time will tell what they do. Repair it, rebuild it, or accept the loss?

And as Mark Steyn has wondered, if they rebuild it will it be as a cathedral (or museum) -- or a mosque?

It is very depressing to see one of Western Civilization's greatest symbols collapse. Some idiot newsreader on WBAP just said something to the effect that the burning of the cathedral touched French people and Catholics. What numbskulls write this rubbish?

For the moment, I am assuming that some dummy worker started this conflagration by accident. Unfortunately, one cannot help but wonder if some jihadi had a hand in it. Such are the times in which we live.

I certainly hope they rebuild Notre Dame, but much irreplaceable history has been lost.
