About Deana Chadwell

I have spent my life teaching young people how to read and write and appreciate the wonder of words. I have worked with high school students and currently teach writing at Pacific Bible College in southern Oregon. I have spent more than forty years studying the Bible, theology, and apologetics and that finds its way into my writing whether I'm blogging about my experiences or my opinions. I have two and a half moldering novels, stacks of essays, hundreds of poems, some which have won state and national prizes. All that writing -- and more keeps popping up -- needs a home with a big plate glass window; it needs air; it needs a conversation. I am also an artist who works with cloth, yarn, beads, gourds, polymer clay, paint, and photography. And I make soap.

Hope and Change

RealHopeThumbby Deana Chadwell
Millions of folk – both dead and alive – voted for that five years ago. Hope and change. Well, Obama’s been long on change and way short on hope, but I’m beginning to believe that hope is alive, well, and impatient for us to catch up. More » • (583 views)

A 12-step Program to American Recovery — Part V

TwelveStepsThumb2by Deana Chadwell
Part V – Of Salads and Dysfunction • It was Abraham Lincoln who said, “A nation divided against its self cannot stand.” He was speaking in a context of civil war so his words carried that weight. The statement demands consideration in today’s context as well, and it brings me to my fifth step in re-establishing an America of promise – we have to start thinking of ourselves as Americans first. A 12-step Program to American Recovery — Part II

TwelveStepsThumb2by Deana Chadwell
Part II – The Specter of Sigmund and Ghosts of Christmas Past • Let’s say we start to pay more attention to words and the deception that saturates our culture (Part 1 – Calling a Spade), we still have other serious chores to take care of if we are to resuscitate the greatness of our nation. A 12-step Program to American Recovery — Part I

TwelveStepsThumb2by Deana Chadwell
Part I – Calling a Spade • “In the beginning was the Word…” The Apostle John begins his gospel with this phrase and in so doing places language in a pre-eminent position. After all, our universe was spoken into existence, so it is not surprising that our national salvation depends also on words. More » • (1300 views)

Throwing a Fit for Fairness

Fairnessby Deana Chadwell
Picture this: a 3-year-old throwing a temper tantrum, kicking and screaming and rolling on the floor. His lower lip is pooched out in a prize-winning pout, his fists clenched. What does he say? “It’s not FAIR!” More » • (1013 views)

We are the Exception

WeThePeopleThumbby Deana Chadwell
[T]his last month Vladimir Putin wrote in the New York Times an op-ed that, in part, chastised America for her insistence that she is exceptional. Well, Vlad, America is absolutely unique, whether you, or Obama, think so or not. More » • (1269 views)

Why in the World Not?

WeThePeopleThumbby Deana Chadwell
Come back with me to my classroom. Average American high school. Classes have finished for the day. I’m just tidying up, shuffling papers, chipping bubblegum off the desks – teacher stuff, when one of my students comes flying through door, breathless and distraught. “Somebody just told me that you’re a conservative!” More » • (2902 views)
